Whether someone wants to lose 100 pounds or 10, the journey to weight loss can be trying and hard. Though the pounds seem to add on to people's frames easily, they don’t seem to drop away as easily. Exercise and a healthy diet are the key to any weight loss journey but there are also ways to support that weight loss. Using certain herbs and spices in food can help to aid weight loss.
Lewis Harrison, in the book, Master Your Metabolism: The All-Natural (All Herbal) Way to Lose Weight, states that there are specific benefits for using herbs and spices. Some of the benefits are that they can help reduce the salt and sugar content of food, offer high flavor with little or no fat, and are virtually calorie free. Eliminating salt from a diet is a great way to help people lose weight because salt retains water, which makes people weigh more.
Herbs & Spices: Quality
The Fat Flush Cookbook says that fresh herbs are better than dried and are the preferred kind of herbs to be used in cooking. These can be frozen if one is worried about the fresh ones wilting. But if you prefer or need to use dry herbs and spices, try to find some that have not been irradiated. Shop for freshness. When the herbs or spices are opened, there should be a fresh, strong, and distinctive aroma. Dried herbs and spices are only good for about six months and then they should be replaced.
Different herbs and spices promote different functions in the body. The herbs and spices that aid weight loss include seasonings that boost metabolism, like cayenne, ginger and mustard, and spices that keep blood sugar levels stable, like cinnamon, bay leaves, and cloves. Anise, fennel, cumin, and dill aid digestion. Cardamom, nutmeg, saffron and marjoram also aid in digestion, while enriching the body's supply of potassium, manganese and iron. (See Reference 1).
How to use Herbs & Spices to Lose Weight
The great thing about herbs and spices is that people can use as much as they want to season a dish. Use herbs and spices in place of salt on chicken, beef, lamb, pork and turkey. Some good examples of different herbs to pair up with foods are chicken with parsley and sage, rosemary or curry and bay leaf; lamb with mint, apples with cinnamon, potatoes with dill or rosemary.
